Somatic Experiencing is a methodology that emphasizes awareness of the body states that accompany emotions and the impact of past experiences. This methodology is especially applicable to the healing of trauma and stress disorders and has been successfully applied to the aftereffects of a broad spectrum of traumatic experiences. At the core of Somatic Experiencing is determining whether a person exposed to trauma is unable to turn off certain physiological responses such as extreme activation (fight/flight mode) or extreme lack of activation and then applying clinical approaches to resolve these responses and the underlying trauma. The work typically addresses trauma symptoms by facilitating the completion of self-protective motor responses previously inhibited by circumstances surrounding the trauma experience. Somatic Experiencing is a gentle approach aimed at developing increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions, thereby addressing trauma aftereffects in a safe, but highly effective manner.
